Importance of Lashing Materials in Securing Cargo
Cargo is transported to various destinations via sea, air, or road. During transit, cargo needs to be secured so that they arrive safely at the final destination. Even for cargo loaded onto containers, apart from securing the container to transport, the cargo needs to be secured within the container too. Ineffectively secured cargo could fall off the transport vehicle causing accidents, traffic congestion, and injure or even lead to loss of life. Lack of proper cargo distribution and securing of cargo to the vehicle can also affect the steering of the vehicle and make it difficult to control the vehicle in case of sudden braking or crash. The most common way of securing any cargo for transport is through lashing materials like web lashings, chain lashings, etc.
A lashing is an arrangement of rope, wire,
or webbing with a linking device that is used to secure and fasten two or more
items together in a somewhat rigid manner. Depending
on the type, size, and shape of the cargoes, lashing can be done in various
ways. Among the lashing materials
that can be used for lashing include cord straps and wires. Cord straps are
strong, weather-resistant, temperature-resistant, rust-proof lashing material
while wires are hard, tough, weather-resistant and especially suitable for
large and heavy machinery.
The most often used method of
lashing is the top-over (friction) lashing. When
using a top-over lashing the cargo is pressed down against the load carrier by
the tensioning force built up in the lashing. This lashing increases the actual friction
between the cargo and the load carrier’s surface and thereby prevents the cargo
from sliding or tipping.
Different Kinds of Lashings
·
Web Lashings
Web lashing or textile lashing
is one of the common methods of securing cargo. The selection of web lashing
depends on the size, shape, and weight of the load, together with the intended
method of use, transport environment, and the nature of the cargo. Web lashings
are specially made for RORO lashing and general cargo lashing.
· Chain Lashings
Lashing chains are perfect for
heavy-duty transportation of cargo where a conventional ratchet is not suited.
There is no stretch within the components allowing for a highly secure load. It
is mostly used in the diagonal or direct lashing of heavy loads with complex
shapes such as construction machines, machinery, etc.
· Fixed Winches
A winch is a
mechanical device that is used to pull in, or let out, or otherwise adjusts
the tension of the wire cable. Fixed winches are often mounted on the
outside of the load bearer. They can be bolted or welded onto the
transport.
Lashing is not only important
for safety but also for the delivery of cargo in a manner that is reliable. Despite
of every precaution taken during transit, accidents do happen due to unforeseen
circumstances. One is entitled to claim insurance for damages faced during such
incidents, however, an important basis to claim that insurance is adequate
lashing. When the lashing is not done correctly, the insurance will not cover
any damage done to the cargo.
